Echinocactus grusonii

Echinocactus grusonii

Echinocactus grusonii (otherwise known as "Golden Barrel" or "Mother-in-Law's Chair") is common in cultivation, but that makes it no less attractive. Unlike the clumping plant pictured, these cacti tend to remain solitary and grow slowly, rarely flowering in cultivation (in the UK anyway). Short spined and white spined forms are also occasionally seen.

The plant pictured is in the Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, Arizona.
