Astrophytum myriostigma
Although cherished by many very experienced collectors,
Astrophytum myriostigma is also often one of the first plants grown by
novices. Various forms are in cultivation, based on the number of ribs,
extent of columnar growth and amount of greyish flecking, and these are
sometimes given their own names. Most have five ribs, however, the plant
pictured on the left is the four ribbed form known as variety quadricostatum.
In truth this variety must be considered dubious as, in many cases, the
fifth rib develops as the plant becomes more mature.
