Open Days

Open days are a popular feature of the Branch calendar.
One of these is the Chairman's "At Home" which takes place each August.
This used to be held in an evening to replace the normal monthly meeting,
however in recent years it has been held on a Sunday afternoon.
In addition we normally hold two or three other
greenhouse open days each year. Often looking round the greenhouse is secondary
to the social aspects of the occasion. Members can talk, share experiences
and advice, or maybe just listen and learn - though much of the conversation
is about anything except plants! |

Not all the greenhouses are as large as the superb
one featured above left which belonged to the late Alan Craig - indeed it was
most definitely the exception. As the saying goes "size doesn't matter",
it's the hospitality and socialising which is important. Often drinks and
some snacks are provided and member's plant sales are actively encouraged.
Cuttings also often change hands and newcomers will usually be surprised
at the generosity of Branch members. |

Sometimes the open days can include the admiration
of a member's cacti and then just as much admiration of some other sort
of plant, such as the Pelargoniums at Fir Tree Nursery, or a fine collection
of bonsai or alpines in a member's garden. |
